What is a Idaho notary bond?
A Idaho notary surety bond is a promise, backed by a surety company, that helps pay a person who is harmed by a mistake or by misconduct of a notary. The bond is for the public. It is not for the notary. If the surety pays a claim, the notary usually has to pay the surety back.

What Idaho requires
- Buy a $10,000 Idaho notary bond from an insurance agent.
- Complete the notary public application, entering your name exactly as it appears on the bond.
- Have the application notarized by another commissioned notary. You cannot notarize your own.
- Swear the oath of office in front of that notary.
- Send the signed application, your original one page bond and the $30 filing fee to the Secretary of State.
Idaho runs a six year commission, not the four years most states use. Your bond runs with it, so you re-apply and buy a new bond every six years.
Send the one page bond only. The Secretary of State's checklist specifically says not to include other insurance papers with the application.
Idaho state employees who need a commission for their job go through the Department of Administration's Risk Management Program instead of buying a bond themselves.
A notary bond does not replace notary errors and omissions (E&O) insurance. The bond pays the public. E&O protects you.
State rules change. Always check with the Idaho commissioning authority for the current requirements before you apply. Details on this page were last checked on 2026-08-11.

Notary errors and omissions (E&O) insurance
A notary bond protects the public. E&O insurance is intended to protect you, the notary, against a claim that comes from an error, a mistake or alleged misconduct in your notarial work. Many Idaho notaries add an E&O policy next to the bond.
