What is remote online notarization?

Remote online notarization is a notarization that you perform over a secure video connection. The signer does not come to you and you do not travel to the signer. People also call it RON, eNotary, online notary, or e-signature notarization.

The rules are set by each state. Your state decides whether you can perform a remote online notarization, which platform you can use, and how long you must keep the recording. Check your own state rules before you take your first online signing.

How a session works

1. Sign up for the platform

You create an account and give the platform your commission details. The platform checks that you can act as a remote online notary in your state.

2. Set up your digital tools

You get a digital certificate and an electronic seal. These replace the ink stamp for an online notarization.

3. Meet the signer by video

The signer joins a secure video session. The platform checks the identity of the signer before the session starts.

4. Notarize and store the record

You apply your electronic seal. The platform keeps the video recording and the electronic journal for the period your state requires.

Benefits of remote online notary

You cut travel cost

You do not drive to the signer. Fuel, parking and travel time all go down.

You work from anywhere

You can take a signing from your office or your home. Your service area is no longer limited by distance.

You reach new clients

Title companies, lenders and law firms look for notaries who can close a file online.

You do more signings each week

A session takes less time than a drive. You can fit more work into the same day.

What RON changes about your insurance

An online notarization changes what you hold and where you hold it. You now keep a video recording, an electronic journal and scanned identification documents. That is a new exposure.

The notary signing industry is changing. We see requests for more types of insurance, including crime insurance for notaries and notary cyber liability, which is also called data breach insurance. If you want to work with title companies, escrow companies and banks, a contract may require these policies. Do not limit your options.

Professional liability (E&O)

Covers a claim that your mistake in a notarial act caused a financial loss. Every quote we start includes it.

Cyber liability / data breach

Covers a breach of the client data you store. It can include the cost of telling clients that their information was exposed.
