What is a Indiana notary bond?

A Indiana notary surety bond is a promise, backed by a surety company, that helps pay a person who is harmed by a mistake or by misconduct of a notary. The bond is for the public. It is not for the notary. If the surety pays a claim, the notary usually has to pay the surety back.

What Indiana requires

  1. Apply online through INBiz, the Secretary of State's Business Services Division.
  2. Buy a $25,000 surety bond from a company licensed to do business in Indiana.
  3. Submit your application electronically. Applications are not accepted on paper.

Indiana's eight year term is twice the four years most states use.

Indiana does not require a notary journal for ordinary, in-person notarizations, though remote notarization has its own journal and recording requirements layered on top of the base $25,000 bond.

The state caps what a notary can charge: $10 per notarization for standard work, $25 for a remote notarial act.

A notary bond does not replace notary errors and omissions (E&O) insurance. The bond pays the public. E&O protects you.

State rules change. Always check with the Indiana commissioning authority for the current requirements before you apply. Details on this page were last checked on 2026-08-12.

Notary errors and omissions (E&O) insurance

A notary bond protects the public. E&O insurance is intended to protect you, the notary, against a claim that comes from an error, a mistake or alleged misconduct in your notarial work. Many Indiana notaries add an E&O policy next to the bond.
